Greenhouses have come a long way since their humble beginnings, evolving from simple structures to sophisticated technological marvels. This journey reflects the ever-changing needs of agriculture, horticulture, and our quest for a sustainable future. In ancient times, the concept of a controlled environment for plant growth can be traced back to the Roman Empire. The Romans built rudimentary structures known as "specularia," which were used to grow exotic plants. These early greenhouses were essentially large rooms with transparent materials, such as mica or oiled cloth, to allow sunlight to enter. However, they were mainly used for the pleasure of the wealthy and did not have the advanced features we associate with modern greenhouses. During the Middle Ages, the art of growing plants in controlled environments was largely forgotten. It wasn't until the Renaissance that interest in horticulture was rekindled. Wealthy nobles and scholars began to build small gardens with glass-covered enclosures to protect delicate plants from the harsh elements. These early glasshouses were still relatively simple in design but marked the beginning of a new era in plant cultivation. Today, greenhouses are an integral part of modern agriculture and horticulture. They come in a wide variety of sizes and designs, from small backyard hobby greenhouses to large commercial operations. Advanced technologies such as computerized climate control, LED lighting, and hydroponics are being used to optimize plant growth and maximize yields. Greenhouses are also playing an important role in sustainable agriculture by reducing water consumption, minimizing pesticide use, and enabling year-round production in areas with harsh climates.

The corresponding structural forms are also different. The sawtooth openings of the fully sawtooth roof are set up vertically from the roof ridge to the gutter. According to the shape of the roof, fully sawtooth roof greenhouses can be divided into pitched roof sawtooth greenhouses and arched roof sawtooth greenhouses. Regardless of the roof type, the greenhouse structure generally connects the columns directly to the greenhouse roof, and forms a slope roof or semi-circular arch roof from the roof ridge to the gutter. The sawtooth opening of the sharp sawtooth roof is from the ridge of the greenhouse to the middle of the greenhouse roof. If the greenhouse ridge is in the middle of the span, an asymmetrical greenhouse roof with high and low ridges can be formed. When the roof ridge is in the middle of the span, vertical poles can be set on the horizontal tie rods of the columns to connect with the left and right roof arches to form mid-span sawtooths. Columns can also be set up in the middle of the greenhouse span, and the tops and middle upper parts of the columns are connected to the two columns respectively. The roof arch bars on the side form saw teeth in the middle of the span. The former has fewer indoor columns and a large working space, while the latter has high structural strength. The greenhouse arch pole can completely adopt the arch pole method of the round arch roof.

Natural ventilation systems for different greenhouse types.

In order to achieve natural ventilation, ventilation windows such as roof windows and side windows are set up in the greenhouse to form a greenhouse natural ventilation system. According to the different characteristics of each type of greenhouse, different ventilation window settings and ventilation window opening and closing types are adopted to determine sufficient wind window area to form different types of natural ventilation systems.
